Tom Devere October 10, 2018 Verified Purchase My mind is not set for comic books and I am new to the series, but it intrigued me enough to want to buy it. And I was rewarded for it. It is extremely hard to show the inner demons and depict mental struggle in art often times. However, Verne pulled it off tremendously. The desire for ascendance or Transcendence is a very real human wish and one that Buddha and Christ and the spirit leads us to. Funny moments abound with some fun twists in a little bit of stoner humor and intellectual wit. Enjoy this as I did. It is certainly worth your money. The art and art style I was unfamiliar with, but it melded well with the story and accentuated the storytelling. Love and love interests like Hal and Marion fill the pages, but there is much beneath the surface of the symbology. I felt I only caught the tip of the Iceberg. From that bygone era sprung the comic book Captain Cannabis , which is currently celebrating the 40th anniversary of its first issue, titled \"Roll Me Another One.\" The book follows the whacky adventures of Hal Lighter, a hero tasked with protecting Earth amidst an extradimensional war, while trying to protect the love of his life, Marion Jones. Lighter uses intergalactic weed to transform into the titular Captain Cannabis. Sure it sounds weird, but a lot of comic book powers come from strange places. Shazam, who is an adult aged superhero, got his powers because as a young boy he took a magical subway to a throne room, where a wizened wizard bestowed onto him, not only extraordinary powers, but the ability to go back-and-forth from adult to child when he transforms. The comic is billed as being \"about as far from politically correct as you can get.\" And it definitely lives up to that moniker. Comic Cook Code be damned, you won't find adventures like this at Marvel or DC. The first issue of the comic, created by Verne Andru, is being reissued with updated artwork to celebrate the milestone. Publisher Marketing : Captain Cannabis No. 1 40th Anniversary edition brings the original 1977 Captain Cannabis comic book into the 21st century. Creator Verne Andru painstakingly digitized, cleaned up and airbrushed the original 16 black-and-white artwork pages giving them a vibrance and polish that makes the story seem to jump from the pages. He took the same care with the story, taking several continuity passes ensuring this epic story starts with a bang! And what a story! In this issue we meet young Hal Lighter and sweetheart Marion Jones as they become entangled in a tale of mystery and intrigue spanning time and space. After she is abducted, a mysterious glowing reefer transforms reluctant hero Hal into Captain Cannabis, a \"superhero\" on a mission. Filling out the 28 pages (including covers) is a seven page comic book story by Verne Andru titled \"Angel.\" Written and illustrated after Captain Cannabis, it follows the lone survivor of a space shuttle crash struggling for survival on an alien planet armed only with her wits. As a special treat, the last 3 pages feature artwork by artist extrodinaire George Freeman. Angel first appeared in \"The Canadian Graphic Collector #4\" during 1978.
