By the body and for the body, the medium is subversive and reparative, and it stands in contradistinction to clinical accounts of illness that tend to disembody or objectify the subject. Employing affect theory, spatial theory, vital materialism, and approaches from race and ethnic studies, women and gender studies, disability studies, and comics studies, Chiu provides readings of recently published graphic pathography. Chiu argues that these kinds of subjective graphic stories, by virtue of their narrative and descriptive strengths, provide a form of resistance to the authoritative voice of biomedicine and serve as a tool to foster important change in the face of social and economic inequities when it comes to questions of health and healthcare. Show Me Where It Hurts reads what already has been manifested on the comics page and invites more of what demands expression. Pathbreaking and provocative, this book will appeal to scholars and students of the medical humanities, comics studies, race and ethnic studies, disability studies, and women and gender studies.

Format: Paperback | Pages: 194 | Publication Date: 2026-10-20

About the Author: Barager, Richard Richard Barager is the author of The Atheist and the Parrotfish and Altamont Augie. Trapped in Japan, Iva refused to renounce her American citizenship. But she was forced to take a job with Radio Tokyo to host "Zero Hour," a propaganda broadcast aimed at demoralizing American troops--in the role of the infamous Tokyo Rose, "The Siren of the Pacific." The dramatic events recounted in this story include: Iva's arrest by the Americans, who eventually found that her actions were blameless Her emotional return to the United States and the racially-motivated public outcry that led to her re-arrest and prosecution for treason The dishonest actions of prosecutors who coerced witnesses into providing false evidence against her The six years she spent in prison, and her eventual pardon by President Ford in 1977 Written by Andre Frattino and illustrated by Kate Kasenow, Tokyo Rose: Zero Hour has an introduction explaining the "Tokyo Rose" phenomenon and the devastating effects of World War II on Asian-American communities that continue to reverberate. From Tokyo's manga cafés to Buenos Aires's kioscos, from Parisian ateliers to Lagos's digital studios, comics have become a truly planetary art form. Global Comics: The Basics is a comprehensive guide to this vibrant world republic of sequential art, tracing how local traditions--Japanese manga, Franco-Belgian bande dessinée, Latin American historietas, African comics, and more--developed their distinctive visual grammars while increasingly cross-pollinating across borders. Frederick Luis Aldama illuminates how creators from Osamu Tezuka to Marjane Satrapi, from the Hernandez Brothers to Deena Mohamed, have wielded the unique power of words-and-pictures storytelling to witness history, challenge power, and reimagine identity. This book offers an important guide to the history of comics globally, situating comic book production, dissemination, and consumption within historical, social, cultural, regional, and global contexts. Essential reading for anyone interested in learning more about the history and cultural significance of comics on a global level and why they matter more than ever in our interconnected age.

Format: Hardcover | Pages: 333 | Publication Date: 2026-10-15

About the Author: Gail Simone first drew attention with her 1999 "Women in Refrigerators" website chronicling comics' frequent mistreatment of female characters. Claremont's focus on the themes of prejudice and tolerance struck at the hearts of comics fans, and he built an unparalleled following during the next three decades. Under his pen, the X-Men franchise spawned a vast array of spin-offs, many of them written by Claremont himself. His other credits include Iron Fist, Ms. Marvel, Power Man and Spider-Woman. Claremont has returned to the X-Men universe in New Exiles, GeNext, X-Men Forever, Chaos War: X-Men and Nightcrawler. Tom DeFalco's earliest comic-book scripts were for Archie and DC; he soon moved to Marvel, where he wrote Avengers, Machine Man and other titles, also launching Dazzler, a hit series of the early '80s. In addition to writing long and well-received runs on Amazing Spider-Man and Thor, DeFalco edited many titles, eventually becoming editor in chief. During the 1980s, he headed the creative team that provided fictional biographies for G.I. Joe members, originally included with Hasbro's toys and later used as the basis for multiple storylines on the animated series. Perhaps his best-known work is multi-title character Spider-Girl, whom he introduced in 1998. DeFalco has authored multiple books, including Ultimate Guides for Avengers, Fantastic Four, Hulk and Spider-Man. Industry giant Marc Silvestri entered the upper echelon of comics innovators in the late '80s during fan-favorite, record-breaking runs on Uncanny X-Men and Wolverine. Silvestri left Marvel in 1992 to co-found Image Comics; his imprint, Top Cow, is one of its four longstanding autonomous studios. At Image, Silvestri created some of today's most popular properties -- including Cyberforce, Witchblade, Weapon Zero and The Darkness. Silvestri has returned to the world of Marvel's mutants on New X-Men and X-Men: Messiah Complex. Kerry Gammill has illustrated Fantastic Four and Power Man and Iron Fist for Marvel, and DC's Superman. In Marvel Team-Up, he and J.M. DeMatteis introduced Frog-Man and the White Rabbit, and he penciled Louise Simonson's scripts on Fallen Angels. Moving to the film industry, Gammill served as a special-effects artist, character designer and storyboard artist on such projects as Species II and Tremors: The Series. He also became one of the guiding minds behind Monster Kid Magazine, a publication focusing on classic monster movies of another era. Three different incarnations of Cloak and Dagger were only a few of Rick Leonardi's artistic achievements for Marvel. His other credits include Uncanny X-Men, New Mutants and Spider-Man 2099. At DC, he drew Batman family titles Batgirl and Nightwing, as well as comic/film crossover Green Lantern vs. Aliens. At Event Comics, he penciled Painkiller Jane. The career of British-born artist Alan Davis took off like a rocket after his humble beginnings at Marvel UK, where he impressed with an acclaimed run on Captain Britain. Davis broke into U.S. comics with runs on Batman and the Outsiders and Detective Comics. Hired by Marvel U.S. in 1986, Davis launched Excalibur with Chris Claremont, and the book quickly became one of mutantdom's most unique and humorous titles. When Davis took over as writer, he continued many plot threads from his Captain Britain run. After a lengthy arc writing and drawing X-Men, Davis illustrated writer Brian Michael Bendis' Avengers Prime and contributed to the status-quo-changing X-Men: Schism. Since his beginnings with Ann Nocenti in Longshot (which earned him a Russ Manning Award), Arthur Adams has most often displayed his distinctive and detail-intensive art in miniseries or one-shots (including several Uncanny X-Men Annuals) -- along with brief but memorable stints on Fantastic Four, X-Factor and other titles. He co-created "Jonni Future" for Alan Moore's Tom Strong's Terrific Tales, and Dark Horse Comics has published his creator-owned Monkeyman and O'Brien. Renowned for cover art at Marvel, DC and elsewhere, Adams has also illustrated trading cards, posters and shirts, among other products; his art can be found in toy design, film advertisements and a series of X-Men-themed Campbell Soup labels. Jeph Loeb's Hulk series featured a string of issues in which Adams provided interior art. Marshall Rogers (1950-2007) provided pencils for Deadly Hands of Kung Fu, Doctor Strange, G.I. Joe and Silver Surfer. His best-known non-Marvel work is an acclaimed run, with writer Steve Englehart, on Detective Comics and other Batman titles; when a Batman newspaper comic strip debuted in 1989, Rogers was chosen as the strip's artist.

Format: Paperback | Pages: 496 | Publication Date: 2027-01-19

The classic saga concludes, setting the stage for X-FORCE!
Watch out, New Mutants -- here comes the man called Cable! Hailing from Bosnia, artist Adi Granov established his reputation among American comic-book fans with Necrowar for Dreamwave Productions. For Marvel, he has earned both critical and fan acclaim for his covers for such series as Iron Man, Amazing Spider-Man and X-Men: Second Coming. Granov's work on Iron Man with writer Warren Ellis redefined the character to such an extent it garnered the attention of Iron Man movie producers. He was called to serve as a consultant on both Iron Man films and helped bring the armored hero's distinctive look to the big screen. Artist Greg Land first gained notice with his work on DC's Batman-family titles Nightwing and Birds of Prey. Moving to Marvel after illustrating CrossGen's Sojourn, he drew Phoenix: Endsong. Next up was a run on Ultimate Fantastic Four that included the first rendering of the Marvel Zombies. Subsequently, Land penciled the blockbuster limited series Ultimate Power before becoming a regular artist on Uncanny X-Men. He subsequently drew a trilogy of Symbiote Spider-Man limited series with writer Peter David.

Format: Paperback | Pages: 296 | Publication Date: 2027-01-12

About the Author: Writer Jason Aaron saw his early collaboration with artist Cameron Stewart on DC/Vertigo's The Other Side named one of the Washington Post's Best Comics of 2007. Aaron rocked the Marvel Universe with Original Sin and unfolded a status-quo-shattering Asgardian epic across multiple Thor titles. He was the ideal choice to steer the Rebel crew of Star Wars into new adventures on the series' return to Marvel, and he ushered in a new era for the publisher with Marvel Legacy. In the wake of that one-shot, he took on Earth's Mightiest Heroes in a sprawling, multiversal run on Avengers; welcomed another iconic property back to the House of Ideas with Conan the Barbarian; and put Frank Castle in charge of the Hand in a shocking relaunch of Punisher. Croatian artist Esad Ribic broke into the U.S. comic industry with Four Horsemen with writer Rob Rodi. His classic European-influenced artistic style garnered attention from Marvel Comics, leading to a career-making series of painted covers for Wolverine and Kingpin. Ribic's stunning interior artwork on the Rodi-penned Loki elicited critical comparisons to the legendary Alex Ross, firmly establishing him as one of the industry's premier painters. His interior art has also graced Silver Surfer: Requiem, Sub-Mariner: The Depths, Uncanny X-Force and Ultimate Comics Ultimates. Ribic reunited with Ultimates writer Jonathan Hickman on event series Secret Wars, and brought epic grandeur to the pages of Jason Aaron's Thor: God of Thunder and Kieron Gillen's Eternals. After co-creating the popular strip Zenith with artist Steve Yeowell in 2000 AD, Morrison made their mark in America with DC Comics, where they revived an obscure hero to critical acclaim in his Animal Man series. In 1989, they wrote the best-selling Batman graphic novel Arkham Asylum and began a memorably surreal run as writer of the freakish heroes of DC's Doom Patrol. Subsequent DC projects included Kid Eternity, Sebastian O, Flex Mentallo, Kill Your Boyfriend, Aztek, Invisibles, DC One Million, Flash and a hugely popular revamping of DC's JLA. Morrison then shifted focus to Marvel Comics, where they had already made a brief pit-stop co-writing 1995's bizarre Skrull Kill Krew with Mark Millar. In addition to their groundbreaking four-year New X-Men run, Morrison's Marvel credits include Fantastic Four: 1234 and Marvel Boy. They have since returned to DC, where their later credits include Seaguy, WE3, Vimanarama, JLA: Classified and Seven Soldiers. While serving as a special creative consultant to DC editorial, Morrison wrote All-Star Superman, and the flagship Batman title and its spinoff Batman Inc.; co-wrote the event series 52; and served as the mastermind behind Final Crisis. Glasgow-born comics artist Frank Quitely has a long history of collaboration with fellow countryman Grant Morrison, often to considerable critical acclaim. After working with various British publishers, Paradox Press and Dark Horse Comics, Quitely got his big break as artist on Morrison's Flex Mentallo mini-series for DC Comics in 1996. Quitely later teamed with Morrison again for the JLA: Earth 2 graphic novel, New X-Men, an Invisibles story, the cyber-animal saga We3 and the All-Star Superman series. Quitely's other DC credits include The Authority and Sandman: Endless Nights; his additional Marvel work includes Daredevil and Captain America: Red, White and Blue. Cyberfrog creator Ethan Van Sciver drew DC's Impulse series for some time and other DC projects featuring characters such as the Justice League and the Flash, in addition to recent work on Green Lantern: Rebirth and Superman/Batman. Marvel features he has drawn include Weapon X, New X-Men and Wolverine. He is currently working on the third part of the Green Lantern trilogy, "The Blackest Night", due to come out in 2009. Croatian-born illustrator Igor Kordey has earned a reputation for his prolific output, working on as many as three or four monthly books at the same time. His Marvel work includes Black Widow: Pale Little Spider, Captain America, Conspiracy, Soldier X, Tales of the Marvels: Wonder Years, New X-Men, and extended runs on X-Treme X-Men and Cable. Graphic novels can introduce a wide range of voices, strengthen student understanding, deepen interpretive skills, and teach students about the constraints and affordances of different formats and genres. The pairings and techniques explored in this book will unlock those immense benefits for today's teachers. Teaching graphic novels helps us to break down the disciplinary distinction between Art and Literature, drawing on current trends in the Humanities to focus on making meaning through and interdisciplinary approach. As well as pairing classic texts with their adaptations, this book goes further, exploring more thematic pairings and how graphic novels can be paired with unrelated books to provide depth and historical context. Readers will find a wealth of teachable ideas, and specific advice on how to pair texts, from assessing the quality of adaptations to pairing for different learning outcomes. Theoretically sound and pedagogically engaging, this is an essential toolkit for using graphic novels and canonical literature to reinvigorate the literature classroom.

Format: Hardcover | Pages: 200 | Publication Date: 2026-11-26

Graphic Narratives of Resistance: Advocating for Representation and Social Justice in French-Language Bandes Dessinées

This edited volume sheds light on the unique capacity of the comics medium for redrawing histories and for exploring hidden, forbidden or imagined spaces. What terrible revelations lie within? Robert Blake is dead--killed by lightning through an oddly unbroken window, the features of his half-burned face set in a cadaveric spasm. Surely his final look was not one of real fear...after all, he was a writer and artist of imagined horrors and weird fiction. It must have been that imagination too that led young Blake to explore an abandoned church in Providence, its steeple shunned even by the birds--that caused him to write his wild ravings in his diary, of the former Starry Wisdom cult that once worshipped there, of their relic the Shining Trapezohedron, of Azathoth, the blind idiot god who sprawls at the center of all chaos... The final work written by H.P. Lovecraft before his death in 1937, The Haunter of the Dark is also a fascinating example of how Lovecraft developed the Cthulhu Mythos through his circle of writer friends. The Haunter of the Dark was inspired by and dedicated to the youngest author in the circle, 19 year-old Robert Bloch--who one day would grow up to write the horror classic Psycho...! The Haunter of the Dark manga also contains a second Lovecraft short story adapted by Gou Tanabe, the early 1917 work Dagon, which introduced the motif of sea-born horror later seen in the Eisner and Harvey-nominated manga H.P. Dark Horse's striking 3-book Shirow Masamune Deluxe Edition series concludes with its final volume, the Shirow Masamune Anthology Deluxe Edition. The Shirow Masamune Anthology Deluxe Edition collects 4 complete graphic novels by Shirow Masamune originally published in trade paperback format: Black Magic, Orion, Dominion, and its follow-up Dominion: Conflict 1 (No More Noise). Black Magic, originally drawn for a fanzine, became Shirow Masamune's professional debut when it was published in 1985. Set in the advanced civilization that once existed on Venus before a runaway greenhouse effect turned Earth's sister planet into a hellscape, Black Magic prefigures many of the concepts of Shirow's later Appleseed, including the emblems of Greek mythology among a technological society, a supercomputer's designs for utopia, and the lethal difference between a tool and its user. Orion , first released in 1991, is a wild romp through cosmic disaster as the ancient Yamata Empire hatches a scheme to capture all negative karma and destroy it in a mystical reactor. What could go wrong? Literally everything, and the fate of existence comes down to a duel between Susano, the God of Destruction, and the bratty sorceress Seska, who intends to use this crisis to become the all-powerful ruler of the galaxy...which, she hopes, will impress a guy she likes! Dominion made its debut in 1986. In a future Japan where urban pollution is so bad that people wear gas masks, criminals like Buaku and his gang have to be badder...and cops have to be the baddest. Police Sergeant Leona Ozaki is ready to meet that standard, tearing up Newport City with the treads of her beloved mini-tank, Bonaparte. The Tank Police was set up to take down Buaku's organization, but high-speed chases with armored vehicles is no way to build the public trust! Dominion: Conflict 1 (No More Noise) from 1995 is an alternate world re-take of the original story setting. Buaku's brawny, big-haired, bioengineered henchwomen Annapuma and Unipuma have been called a lot of things, such as "the extinct megafauna of today's catgirls." But from now on you can call them both "Officer," as it turns out that being androids, they have legal immunity for their crimes--and needing a new job, they've just joined the Tank Police...assigned to ride along with their former pursuer Leona!
